Active X Programming Unleashed
By Weiying Chen
B: This book provides an excellent outline and introduction to ActiveX, COM, and OLE. Besides the ActiveX and client OLE objects it also focuses on Java, Visual Basic scripting, and the server side of ActiveX, ISAPI and Internet Database Connector. It is interesting to note that ActiveX technology in Microsoft's definition encompasses all of their Internet solutions, including ActiveX client controls, ISAPI, Internet Database Connector, Active Server Pages, the Active Database connector, and Visual Basic Scripting. Most people think of ActiveX controls when they think of ActiveX. This book includes and goes beyond ActiveX controls, and discusses the other technologies which make up ActiveX. Included is a complete chapter on ISAPI Server Extensions and another whole chapter on ISAPI Server Filters. In the ISAPI Server Extension chapter there is a discussion of parse maps, and how to get around them. Also, included is how to setup and debug your ISAPI Server Extensions. In the ISAPI Filter chapter, there is a discussion of Filter authentication, along with example code. Included is a logging filter that does addition logging of the IIS Server. Both chapters discuss how to connect you Internet service applications to SQL Server using ODBC. Along with those two chapters is a complete chapter on the Internet Database Connector and how to get around some of it's problems to make it a stronger tool. Finally, if you are interested in writing CGI executables there is example code including code for the post and get method of submitting data over HTTP. This book is an excellent choice because it covers a broad range of topics completely.
